Blueberry History and Interesting Facts

Blueberry History

The American blueberry has had a long history because of its flavor, nutrition, and health benefits. Native Americans and early settlers knew back then that this berry had many uses and was important in keeping them well.

Because of this, they used blueberries as a big part of their diet and as a medicine.

Blueberry juice was used early in the history of the United States to treat illness. They used it for treating coughs, during childbirth as a relaxant, and to treat digestive issues.

Interesting facts about blueberries:

Blueberries are flowering shrubs native to North America, eastern Asia, and Northern Europe.

They have a special pigment which makes them one of few human foods that are naturally colored blue.

True wild blueberries are only found in North America.

Blueberries are now grown around the world.

Even countries in the southern half of the planet like Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia are exporters of blueberries.

I found it interesting that South Africa now exports blueberries to Europe.

Blueberries appear to be growing in popularity as well as expanding around the globe.

According to a 2005 report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “Argentine blueberry production has increased over the last three years with planted area up to 400 percent.” Chile is the largest exporter of blueberries to the northern half of the globe.

You can get blueberries in a variety of ways, you can even buy and grow your own if you are ambitious enough! I prefer the easier method of purchasing blueberry products that other people have harvested.
