I recently attended a lecture given by Dr. Steven Pratt. He is a famous doctor seen on Oprah and known for his expertise in health, lifestyle and aging. Dr. Pratt has written several books, including one of my favorites, "Superfoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life." Of course, blueberries are included in the list of superfoods.
Dr. Pratt was a very dynamic and interesting speaker. He referred to blueberries as "brain berries" because they can help with the reversal of damage and brain deterioration. He stated that the vascular system loves berries and they protect the blood vessels.
Another interesting thing I learned from this lecture about blueberries are that blueberries protect the brain against cosmic radiation for astronauts.
Dr. Pratt stated that his three favorite foods are spinach, salmon, and blueberries. A person could live a healthy life with just these three foods.
It is not just one nutrient in these foods, but a synergy of nutrients working together that make them super foods. The sum total of the nutrients working together make these powerful antioxidants. Some of the nutrients, such as tocotrinols found in blueberry seeds, have proven benefits. There are still unknown nutrients yet to be discovered.
You may have seen Dr. Pratt on the episode of Oprah which originally aired on February 18, 2004. This Oprah show was titled, "Grocery Store 101" The subtitle for this episode was, "Our "Food Dude" tells us the 14 superfoods we need to put in the shopping cart and what foods to avoid."
