Wild Blueberries Top The Charts In Antioxidant Power and Nutrition

Wild blueberries have even more antioxidant power than cultivated blueberries which are high in antioxidant power and health promoting nutrients. In the United Stated, wild plants are called lowbush blueberries and cultivated blueberries are called highbush blueberries.

Non-cultivated plants are native plants that grow naturally without human intervention. Cultivated blueberries are hybrid plants made to grow all around the world.

Why is wild better?

The wild type of blueberries have the highest antioxidant rating when compared with 20 other fruits according to USDA research. This research also included cultivated blueberries which rated high, but not number one.

Much of the nutrition from blueberries comes from the skin. Wild berries are smaller. This means that you get more of the nutrients from the skin per serving than you get from cultivated berries.

In harsher climates, the fruit becomes even more packed with antioxidants. For example, the blueberry juice I drink is from wild Alaskan blueberries.

These berries have a very harsh climate to deal with. They have periods of endless day when the blueberries are growing. They survive by having a thicker skin which can handle this.

Because of the growing conditions, wild Alaskan blueberries have 10 times the antioxidant power of cultivated blueberries.

If you have the opportunity to pick and eat fresh wild berries daily, that is the very best option. If you are like me and don't have that option, you can get wild berries in frozen form or in juice form. If you choose the juice form, just make sure that it is pure juice and not just a sugared drink!
